Fort Mose

Presented by Darcia MacMahon and Kathleen Deagan

Learn about Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free black community in what is now the United States, established in 1738. The Fort Mose story challenges the notion of early African-American experience as simply that of slavery, offering instead a rich view of African-American life in the Spanish colonies.
