Camp Wildlands – Crystal River – June 2017

21 Jun

Our first Camp Wildlands was a success!

We had 12 campers (ages 14-17) and  most of them had no kayak or camping experience. Needless to say, it was an amazing learning experience. We camped at the Chassahowitka River Camp ground where we kayaked and explored the Chassahowitka River. We also went to the Homosassa Spring Wildlife State Park and saw a variety of wildlife including manatees and flamingoes. We swam at Hunter Springs, Seven Sisters Spring, the Crack Spring, and adventured at Fort Island Beach. We learned about early Florida history at Crystal River Archaeological State Park, and visited Gulf Archaeological Research Institute to learn about what archaeologists really do.

These kids come from a variety of backgrounds, most were underprivileged and would never have been able to have this opportunity otherwise. We encourage you to sponsor a child to go to Camp Wildlands.  Interested parties can make a check payable to City of Ocala (memo: Camp Wildlands) and can be mailed or hand-delivered to:

Fort King National Historic Landmark

Attn: Keifer Calkins

3925 East Fort King Street

Ocala FL, 34470

The full price to sponsor a child for a week of camp is $175, but we accept donations of any size. For most of these kids, this is a transformative opportunity, experiencing the Florida that is around them that they don’t have the opportunity to access. This is life changing!
